The oldest breeds of American cats started life as mousers and their origins are usually attributed to ship cats from various ages. Newer breeds, such as the Sphynx, were often the result of a spontaneous mutation that breeders sought to continue through a breeding programme and others, such as the Bengal, were the result of hybridisation.
